The Greatest Show: con le note della - particolarmente emblematica e azzeccata (come si vede nel testo riportato in coda) - canzone e la voce di Hugh Jackman si apre in maniera spettacolare e dirompente il The Greatest Showman tanto voluto dall'attore australiano, che dal 2009 ne insegue la realizzazione. Un musical che nelle intenzioni si propone di raccontare le origini del moderno circo itinerante e del suo creatore il "geniale" Phineas Taylor Barnum, che lo stesso Jackman presenta come un illuminato Steve Jobs dell'epoca, la metà del diciannovesimo secolo.
Ma attenzione a credergli davvero, e a considerarlo un film di denuncia - o un biopic - visto quanto è edulcorata l'immagine di P.T. Barnum e ricca di licenze la sua storia. In primis, non da poco, quella relativa ai 'fenomeni da baraccone', da sempre sfruttati dallo show biz e che qui sembrano invece diventare attori della loro carriera. E grazie alla lungimiranza di un imprenditore sessantenne, qui trasformata in una curiosa forma di solidarietà da parte di un affascinante padre di famiglia determinato a seguire il suo sogno.
Ovviamente la scelta segue la necessità di rendere il tutto più commerciabile, anche per la presenza di comprimari come Zac Efron e la 'disneyana' Zendaya (per altro ben inseriti nel complesso, al pari della strepitosa Keala Settle). In fondo c'è una coerenza profonda tra il Circo e questo film, entrambi nati come spettacoli costruiti per intrattenere, senza preoccuparsi troppo dei mezzi utilizzati per raggiungere il proprio fine.
Che non è certo quello di risultare credibile nelle sue dinamiche familiari o di conquistare il nostro cuore con la acrobatica storia d'amore dei due giovani Giulietta e Romeo e la nostra compassione con i vari esempi di discriminazione, ma quello di colpirci con la magnificenza delle scenografie e di tenerci con il fiato sospeso per le coreografie dei numeri musicali e per la forza di certe apparizioni e momenti. Non è la magia a diventare realtà, come ci viene promesso, ma la realtà a lasciare spazio all'illusione. E a una rappresentazione che forse non resterà negli annali, né saprà scavare a fondo nella nostra anima, ma che di certo raggiunge il suo scopo, di sedurci per il breve tempo in cui vi assistiamo.
