La spia britannica Alec Leamas viene mandata in Germania dell’Est apparentemente per disertare, ma in realtà per cercare informazioni. Ma mentre la trama si infittisce, Leamas comincia ad avere la sensazione di non essere che un ingranaggio in un meccanismo più grande e lotta per riaffermare la sua umanità.
